Boiler Broken Down in North London? What to Do Next

A step-by-step guide for Barnet and North London homeowners — what to check, what to switch off, and when to call a Gas Safe engineer.

A boiler that won't fire on a cold North London morning is more than an inconvenience — with young children, elderly relatives or vulnerable tenants in the property, it's an urgent safety issue. Here's what our Barnet-based engineers recommend you do in the first ten minutes, before you book an emergency boiler repair.

1. Check the pressure gauge

If the needle is below 1 bar your boiler will lock out. Most modern combis have a filling loop — usually a silver braided hose under the unit — that lets you top up to 1.2 bar. If pressure drops again within 24 hours you almost certainly have a leak and need a central heating repair.

2. Look for fault codes

The digital display will usually show a code like F22, E133 or A21. Photograph it and read it out when you call. A trained engineer can often diagnose the fault before they arrive, which means we turn up with the right parts — saving you a second visit.

3. Reset once, never twice

Most boilers have a reset button. Press it once and wait two minutes. If the boiler locks out again, stop. Repeated resets can damage the PCB and turn a £180 sensor swap into a £450 board replacement.

4. Smell gas? Stop everything

If you smell gas, open the windows, turn the gas off at the meter, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Then call us for a follow-up gas safety check once it's safe to re-enter.

5. Call a Gas Safe engineer

We aim to be at any address in Barnet, Finchley, Whetstone or East Barnet within two hours for genuine emergencies, and we carry the most common parts on the van. If the fault can't be fixed the same day, we'll loan temporary heaters so the household isn't left cold.

You can also book a non-urgent boiler repair online for the next working day.

Prevention is cheaper than cure

Eight out of ten breakdowns we attend in North London could have been prevented by an annual boiler service. A £95 service every autumn is the single best insurance policy a homeowner can buy.
